Their stories reflect the characteristics of exceptional educators identified by Tim Allen, former Executive Director of the Carlston Foundation: passion, empathy, creativity, and an unwavering belief in every student’s potential.

Following a diverse and impactful career that spanned mental health, hospital administration, and professional sports, Tim Allen returned to education in 2007 as the Executive Director of the Carlston Family Foundation—now known as Above & Beyond.It was a role he often described as “the best job I could ever imagine.”

For 14 years, Tim traveled across California meeting teachers, visiting classrooms, and listening to the inspiring stories of students whose lives had been transformed by extraordinary educators. His deep admiration for their work was a significant factor in the creation of the Teacher Leadership Academy, which brought together Carlston honorees and early-career teachers to share best practices and foster meaningful professional learning communities across the state.

People always felt good in Tim’s company. He was a kind and attentive listener who genuinely cared about others. After his retirement in 2021, Tim continued his commitment to education by joining our Board of Directors. He will be remembered for his compassion, humor, and lifelong dedication to education, mentorship, and the teaching community. Tim’s presence will be deeply missed, and his impact will continue to be felt by all whose lives he touched.
